Struggling with energy bills? You’re not alone – and there are things we can do together.
In October 2024, energy costs were around 50% higher than at the start of 2021. Add to that the withdrawal of the Winter Fuel Payment for most pensioners, and it’s no surprise that many people are finding it hard to keep up.
But there are practical steps you can take. Here’s how to start.
1. Check whether you could pay less – by changing tariff or supplier
Start by looking at your energy statement (your “bill”). If your current supplier offers a cheaper tariff, it should be listed there.

Need a helping hand? Our volunteers at the Energy Helpdesk (see Events) can explore options with you. Or use our Contact form to arrange a chat.
2. Check for estimated readings (look for an ‘E’ on your statement)
If there’s an ‘E’ next to any reading, that means it was estimated – and it might not be accurate. You could be paying for energy you didn’t actually use.
Contact your supplier to give a real meter reading. If you’re unsure how, just fill in our Contact form and one of our volunteers will get in touch.
3. Consider a smart meter
A smart meter lets your supplier read your meter remotely – no more estimated readings. It also helps you see how much electricity you’re using in real time, and some cheaper tariffs are only available with one.
Don’t have a smart meter? Ask your supplier if you can get one.
4. Look at how you pay
Paying by Direct Debit is usually the cheapest option.
If you pay by Pre-Payment card (which works well for some people), just be aware it can be more expensive. Remember to top up during summer too – otherwise standing charges can build up into debt.
5. If you owe money – don’t wait. Talk to your supplier.
Suppliers are required to help you find an affordable way to pay. Contact them before the debt grows too large and agree on a payment plan you can manage.
You don’t have to do this alone. These trusted organisations offer free, confidential help:

6. Stop heat escaping – and save money without turning the thermostat down
The expensive heat you’re paying for can leak out through poorly insulated lofts, walls, floors, single-glazed windows, and draughty doors.
We can help you find exactly where heat is escaping (ask us about our Thermal Imaging Camera) and apply for grants to make your home more energy efficient.
Remember: You don’t have to face this alone. Our volunteers are here to help – contact us anytime.
