Local People, Practical Action

Climate Action Silsden is a community group of volunteers working to make our town greener, more sustainable, and more resilient — one practical project at a time.

Who We Are

Climate Action Silsden started with a simple idea: that the most meaningful response to the climate and nature crisis often begins close to home. We’re a group of local residents who believe Silsden can lead by example — showing that a small Yorkshire town can take real, visible steps towards a more sustainable future.

We’re entirely volunteer-run and open to everyone. You don’t need any particular expertise or a big commitment — just an interest in making things better. Most of what we do is hands-on and sociable, whether that’s planting hedges, mending broken appliances, or helping a neighbour cut their energy bills.

We work across three main areas — biodiversity, energy and waste — and partner with the parish council, local schools, and other community groups to make our projects go further.

What We Believe

The principles that shape how we work

Practical, not preachy

We focus on visible action that makes a difference people can see and use — not lectures or guilt.

Open to all

Every project welcomes newcomers. No experience, no minimum commitment, no barriers to joining in.

Rooted in Silsden

Local knowledge, local partnerships and local pride drive everything we do.

Major Initiatives in our Community

A few of the projects that keep us busy throughout the year. Each one is open for you to get involved with.

Repair Café & Refill Shop

Our monthly Repair Café brings skilled volunteers together to mend almost anything — from clothes to electricals — keeping it out of landfill. Alongside it, the Refill Shop lets people top up on cleaning products, shampoo and more, cutting down single-use plastic.

Planting and Habitats

We’ve planted hundreds of metres of native hedge, dozens of trees, and created wildflower areas and nest boxes across Silsden — including a major project with the local primary school.

Home Energy Audits

Our trained volunteers offer free home energy audits and run information sessions to help residents make their homes warmer, more efficient, and cheaper to run.

Only Rain Down the Drain

A campaign and practical effort to protect Silsden’s becks and waterways from pollution, including distributing water butts to reduce runoff.

There's a Place for Everyone

Whether you have an afternoon to spare or want to take on something more regular, there’s a way to be involved that suits you.
