Home Energy Audits

Home energy efficiency is crucial for saving money on bills, reducing your carbon footprint to fight climate change, improving comfort with consistent temperatures and better air quality, and future-proofing your home against rising energy costs. By using less energy for heating and lighting, your home will be more comfortable to live in and cheaper to run. Our free home energy audits can help with this.

Houses in the UK lose more energy through poorly-insulated lofts, attic rooms, walls, draughty windows and doors than those in most other European countries, but how do you know what to do first ?  What will make the biggest difference to your house for the least cost ?

Where are you losing most heat from your house?

Volunteers from our Energy team can visit you at home to help you to decide what to do first.  It may be something simple like adjusting your boiler settings or thermostats or bleeding your radiators, or it may be that your loft doesn’t have enough insulation (the recommended depth is 27cm). Did you know that up to a quarter of heat in your home could be escaping through the roof – that’s heat that you’ve already paid for?  Installing loft insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to stop wasting energy; it’s easy to do and, for a reasonable initial cost, will save you money year after year.

Our team have a Thermal Imaging camera which can help to identify where your house is losing heat so that you can decide what to tackle first.  They also have a damp meter which can indicate where damp might be a problem and can suggest ways of dealing with excessive condensation.

Our volunteers are not professionals; their knowledge is gained from research and from taking practical steps to improve the energy efficiency of their own homes. They won’t try to sell you anything.
