Why old bulbs are costing you
Old incandescent light bulbs are highly inefficient. They convert only about 5–10% of the electricity they use into light – the rest is wasted as heat. (Try putting your hand near an incandescent bulb and you’ll feel exactly what we mean.)
LED bulbs do the opposite
LED bulbs convert up to 90% of their energy into light. That means a 6W LED bulb can be just as bright as a 60W incandescent bulb. Plus, LEDs stay cool to the touch – making them safer to use, especially around children or fabrics.
How much money could you save?
The average UK household can save between £40 and £100 per year by switching to LED lighting.
Let’s break that down:
- A 60W incandescent bulb running 5 hours a day costs about £12 per year (at 24p/kWh)
- An equivalent 9W LED bulb costs only £4 per year – that’s a 67% saving
What about the upfront cost?
LED bulbs do cost more to buy initially, but they typically pay for themselves within 6 months to 2 years, depending on how much you use them.
Example: A £5 LED bulb used 5 hours a day saves around £8 per year – that’s a payback period of just 7 months.

How long do LEDs last?
- LED bulb: 25,000–50,000 hours
