The aim of the Zero Waste group is to reduce the amount that we throw away which either goes into landfill or is incinerated (burnt). Landfills are a significant source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas contributing to climate change, and the incineration of waste generates emissions including carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). We achieve our aims by:
  • Running a monthly Repair Café and, in partnership with Plastic Free Silsden, Refill Shop.
  • Working in partnership with other organisations to collect and repurpose unwanted items – including bikes, laptops, tablets and smart phones, and garden and woodworking tools.
  • We have worked with local landowners to collect and re-purpose plastic tree guards.
  • We also work closely with Plastic Free Silsden to arrange litter picks throughout the town and with Friends of Silsden Beck to arrange clean-up sessions in Silsden beck. We are always keen to have new volunteers to help with these sessions. See Events to find out about whether there are any sessions happening in the near future.
